Atman is the mental faculty that is devoid of all attachments but it still reads the information held in one's brain memory cells to form the basis for actions based on truth when atman=Brahman. Such a person is the Self (Purushouttama) as opposed to the self (purusho) the normal state of a person as jiva. The Self has become synonymous with Brahman, and therein it is said Thou art that. With atman having lost its attachment to God, the purushouttama is fully liberated as Brahman. This is Vishistaadvaita Vedanta. It is the comprehensive Reality.
Consciousness generates delusional thoughtd which id an impediment to the realisation of the Self and so needs to be wiped off leaving atman as ones mental faculty. This state of being is pure and unadulterated truth being devoid of knowledge as Brahman and is highly desireable in the perfaction of advaita. It is not just temporary cessation of thinking that is needed but a permanent one operating on autopilot without motivation nonchalantly spontaneously and unpremeditatedly.
